Saint Alphonsus Maria de Liguori was born in Italy in 1696. He was a priest, a bishop, and a writer. He loved God and wanted to help people live good lives. He started a religious group called the Redemptorists to teach people about God’s love. Alphonsus wrote many books about faith and prayer. He is known as the patron saint of moral theologians and confessors. He died in 1787 and was made a saint in 1839.
As a young boy, Alphonsus was very smart. He studied law and became a lawyer when he was only 16 years old. He was successful, but he did not feel happy. He wanted to serve God more than anything else. After losing an important case, he decided to leave his job and become a priest. His father was not happy with this choice, but Alphonsus followed his heart and trusted God.
As a priest, Alphonsus worked hard to teach people about God. He traveled to many places to preach and help the poor. He spoke in a simple way so that everyone could understand him. He believed that God’s love was for everyone, not just for the rich or educated. His kindness and wisdom made many people respect him.
Later, Alphonsus started the Redemptorist order. This group of priests and brothers focused on helping those who were poor and in need. They traveled to small villages to teach people about faith and encourage them to trust in God. Alphonsus wanted everyone to know that God forgives and loves them.
Alphonsus also wrote many books about prayer and faith. One of his most famous books is called “The Glories of Mary.” In his writings, he explained how Mary, the mother of Jesus, helps people come closer to God. He also wrote about moral theology, helping priests understand how to guide people in their spiritual lives.
In 1762, Alphonsus became a bishop. He worked to improve the lives of people in his diocese. He helped the sick, taught priests, and encouraged people to pray more. Even when he became old and sick, he continued to write and pray for others. He suffered a lot in his final years, but he always trusted in God.
