The Story of Omar Khayyam – Mathematician and Astronomer
A long time ago, in the year 1048, a boy named Omar Khayyam was born in Nishapur, a city in Persia (modern-day Iran). From a young age, Omar was very intelligent and loved learning. He enjoyed solving problems, reading books, and asking questions about the world. Little did he know that one day, his knowledge would change history!
A Love for Learning
Omar’s parents knew he was special, so they made sure he received the best education. He studied mathematics, astronomy, poetry, and philosophy. He was fascinated by numbers and the stars in the sky. He wanted to understand how the world worked.

His calendar, known as the Jalali Calendar, was so accurate that it was even more precise than the one used in Europe at the time. Some parts of his calendar are still used in Iran and Afghanistan today!

Besides being a scientist, Omar was also a wonderful poet. He wrote many short poems called rubaiyat, which are four-line verses. His poetry talked about life, nature, and the mysteries of the universe. His most famous collection, The Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam, became popular around the world.
